Cleaning
It is very worthwhile to invest in cleaning
your computer periodically, especially the fans and heat sinks. Accumulated
dust can clog the fans and heat sinks (computer processors get very hot)
causing overheating problems that can result in decreased reliability,
computer failure and loss of valuable data.
For example: We've worked on several desktop and
laptop PC whose heat sinks & fans had become very clogged with dust. The
fans would frequently switch to high speed mode to provide additional
cooling resulting in greatly increased noise levels. We took the computers
apart, carefully cleaned the fans and heat sinks and now the computers are
running much more quietly and the fans very rarely need to switch to high
speed to provide extra cooling. In most cases, such a cleaning takes about
30 minutes. At the same time we would clean out dust in the case, power
supply, motherboard, expansion cards, hard disk drive, CD & DVD drives,
floppy disk drive, etc.
